Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counselling with me is a little different than what the word might imply: I will not tell you what to do, because that usually does not work. I will facilitate your journey, and perhaps that of your significant other and/or your children, so that you might come up with the right answer and solution that works for you.

Psychotherapy will guide you into getting to know your real self at a deeper level. Discover what you are truly about and how to follow your true impulses instead of complying and feeling depressed or resentful. How to be fully alive within the context of your own values.

Typically, individual sessions are 60 minutes long and couple and family sessions are 90 minutes.

My areas of focus:

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)

‘Any “bad” incident in life can either be overcome or can get stuck in our bodies and/or our psyches.  According to Dr. Gabor Maté, an incident becomes traumatic when the person who went through it does not have any support or does not have the right support to facilitate healing and let it go. It consequently forms an emotional “cyst” in our psyches, which needs to be protected, overridden or suppressed. No matter how we react to it, it can continue to have an impact on our health and our sense of freedom, controlling our daily lives, without us being aware of the process.’                                                                                            —      Adela

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) is a client-centred approach to guiding clients in addressing and releasing unwanted emotional or behavioural after-effects of traumatic incidents – grief and loss (loved ones, financial status, etc.), accidents, injuries, domestic and other forms of violence, and any painful life experience. TIR rapidly reduces post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

                      —      Margaret Nelson, Certified TIR & LSR Facilitator and Senior Trainer

Adela is a certified TIR Facilitator (TIRF) and is presently enrolled in the Advanced TIR internship program. She works with people who have undergone mild to severe trauma, such as child abuse, sexual abuse, accidents, natural disasters, war, and violent crime. The results have been encouraging. Clients have reported feeling more organized, grounded, lighter, as well as experiencing more joy in their lives.

Individual therapy

Being heard is often what we must long for and yet it is an almost lost art amongst us. Individual counselling with Adela will give you the undivided attention you have been looking for. Adela can facilitate your getting to know yourself and help you determine how you can improve your emotional quality of life.

Through counselling or psychotherapy, you may grow to accept yourself just the way you are and may even be humorous about it. Joy and peace are awaiting to enter your being.

Couples therapy

Have you noticed that often you can be nicer to your friends or even total strangers than to the very person you chose to share your life with — your spouse, mate or partner?  Are you tired of fighting or of “frozen” nights?

Through counselling with Adela, you can learn how you each get triggered by the other and how to avoid reacting in ways that continually pull you apart. You will learn how to re-create your relationship on a positive note so it is pleasant, meaningful and life-giving to both of you. If you have children, they will be the first ones to benefit from the changes you make.

Family therapy

How would you like to co-create a nurturing and trusting home where every family member can grow and thrive because they feel safe and loved?

Adela will collaborate with you and your family to solve conflicts. She will address issues such as how to improve your communication and parenting skills, as well as how to face unexpected crises and life transitions. She will help you build on your strengths to help you and your family to feel satisfied, competent and content as a family.

Acculturation

Adela can facilitate  the transition process when going through a big life change such as moving countries, changing jobs, changing relationship status or losing a loved one.

Anger management

Have you ever reacted in an explosive way and then regretted it, or not known how to respond to someone and withdrawn, thereby severing the connection with your loved ones? Have you thought it was someone else’s doing that triggered your behaviour? Have people around you blamed you for your actions or withdrawn from you?

Now is the time to look into changing your angry reactions into constructive, self-assured actions. Adela can help you find out how to regulate and manage your anger so you feel good about yourself and leave the shame behind.

Anxiety

You would like to feel calm and at peace with yourself.  Physical sensations inform us about mental anxiety and vice versa.  Learn how to identify these and explore their origin, how to control repetitive thinking and how to relax, develop a clear mind and make sense of your life.
